Aung San Suu Kyi Treated for Stomach Illness

Aung San Suu Kyi, detained leader of Myanmar’s embattled National League for Democracy, seems to have recovered from a digestive illness this week.
“She is in good condition,” Suu Kyi’s Dr.Tin Myo Win reported on Tuesday June 13.  Suu Kyi’s access to medical care is limited by the military government that only permits irregular monthly visits by doctor Tin Myo Win.

Reports on June 9th that Suu Kyi had been taken to a hospital were later revised by the NLD, who revealed that she received all treatments in her home.  Friday’s initial reports prompted the United States State Department to issue a statement voicing concern for Suu Kyi’s well being and calling the military regime to ensure Suu Kyi receives proper medical care.

Suu Kyi’s term of house arrest was extended on May 27th despite a recent visit by UN Under-Secretary General Ibrahim Gambari who raised hopes of possibility of her release.

Suu Kyi has been under house arrest for more than 10 of the last 17 years. Her current detainment began in May 2003 after an attack on her and her supporters in central Myanmar by a militia thought to be linked to the ruling junta.
