Asean parliamentarians appealed to the United Nation Security Council to take action on Myanmar in New York last week. Three members of the Asean Inter-Parliamentary Myanmar Caucus, Indonesian Member of Parliament Djoko Susilo, Filipino Member of Parliament Loretta Rosales, and Thai Senator Jon Ungphakorn, spoke at a panel discussion on the regional implications of the situation in Myanmar.
“We feel that Burma, at the very least, is a security threat within the region and can therefore easily be a security threat within the international community,” Rosales said.
The parliamentarians pleaded for the United Nations to pursue a resolution for concrete action. “We can no longer tolerate the situation. Please do something more concrete rather than just paying lip-service diplomatically, which is no real solution in the situation,” Susilo said.
He also warned about the likely next United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon: “I have to say, regarding Mister Ban Ki-Moon, when he was foreign ministers, as a member of Caucus, we are not quite happy.”
